BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES, is best for information.

If you ask regular CBD users why they use CBD, you’ll likely get a variety of answers. The answers are varied, and often depend on the individual and their specific needs.

Some CBD products are used for many great reasons, while others contain additional ingredients that are designed to target specific needs.

But before you dive deeper into CBD benefits, it’s important to understand how and why CBD oil works within the human body.

What Are Cannabinoids and How Do They Work?

As we mentioned on our page exploring what CBD is, CBD is short for cannabidiol. It’s just one of the many different compounds found in the cannabis plant called cannabinoids.

Cannabinoids account for most of the useful of cannabis. Cannabinoids found in plants - technically called phytocannabinoids - actually mimic the function of compounds produced naturally by the human body and other mammals, called endocannabinoids.

What Do Endocannabinoids Do?

Endocannabinoids - those produced by the human body - are a type of signaling molecule, or neurotransmitter. A wide variety of neurotransmitters are produced by the nervous system in response to states of health and environmental factors.

Our nervous system uses neurotransmitters to keep track of and control various systems throughout our bodies. For example, if it is determined that a system within your body has gone out of balance, the nervous system produces neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters travel through the bloodstream and interact with receptors on cells, instructing them to adjust their behavior accordingly.

The human endocannabinoid system (ECS) is one system of neurotransmitters that works to keep our bodies in balance. It has two main components: the endocannabinoid receptors found on the surface of cells throughout the body and the endocannabinoids themselves that interact with the receptors.

This system impacts many important functions of the body, including appetite regulation, sleep patterns, moods, metabolism, immune response and more.

Phytocannabinoids - cannabinoids produced by plants, such as CBD from the hemp plant - can also interact with the human the endocannabinoid system.

Before we get into CBD uses, let’s take a closer look at some of the common types of cannabinoids and other beneficial compounds found in full spectrum CBD and broad spectrum CBD oil.

Types of Cannabinoids & Other Cannabis Compounds

While CBD is the cannabinoid we’re most focused on, the cannabis plant produces a wide variety of cannabinoids and other useful compounds that interact with the human body, like terpenes.

What Are the Most Common Cannabinoids?

  • Cannabidiol (CBD) — The second most common cannabinoid produced by the cannabis plant that is non-psychotropic (it doesn’t get you high).
  • Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — The primary psychoactive compound in marijuana that gives users a feeling of euphoria.
  • Cannabichromene (CBC) — This third most common cannabinoid, also non-psychoactive, is thought to support mood and joint and muscle function.
  • Cannabinol (CBN) — Believed to support joint and muscle function and aid a good night’s rest.
  • Cannabigerol (CBG) — Non-psychoactive and used to support mood and joint and muscle function.
  • Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv) — Less psychoactive than THC.
  • Cannabidivarin (CBDv) — Similar to CBD in its effects.
  • Delta(8) THC — Similar to delta(9)-THC, less psychoactive and may support a relaxed mood.
  • THCa and CBDa — Compounds found in raw cannabis that are non-psychotropic.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are a class of hydrocarbon compounds produced by a variety of plants. The cannabis plant, however, is currently the most terpene-dense plant known to humans.

In nature, terpenes play an important role in the life of plants, acting as a repellent for pests and as an attractant for pollinators and seed spreaders.

Terpenes are recognized as safe for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Association (FDA) and are currently used in a variety of food and cosmetic products. And they can have powerful effects on our bodies. In fact, terpenes have been used by humans for thousands of years in a practice commonly known as aromatherapy, because they each have their own distinct aroma. For example, the smell of citrus is produced primarily by a combination of limonene and pinene, both of which are thought to elevate mood.

Terpenes also act on cannabinoid receptors and are known to modify the effects of cannabinoids - a process referred to as “the entourage effect.”

CBD benefits are vast and still being researched

What Is the Entourage Effect?

While terpenes are not as potent as cannabinoids in terms of their usefullness, they are an important part of the cannabis plant and play an important role in how cannabinoids, like CBD, interact with the human body.

The combined impact of cannabinoids and terpenes is known as “the entourage effect.” The substances work together to produce a wide range of usefullness, which is thought to be greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, cannabinoids and terpenes working together are stronger than each substance working on its own.

It’s this entourage effect that makes Palleviate’s full spectrum CBD oil and broad spectrum CBD oil so sought after. Some CBD oil products are actually oil infused with pure CBD, which means they don’t have the added benefits of terpenes and other cannabinoids within the hemp plant.

Palleviate’s full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD oil products, however, contain the natural balances of these powerful compounds found within the cannabis plant, and produce the entourage effect.

The Usefullness of CBD Oil

So, now that we understand how CBD and other compounds found within the cannabis plant work on our bodies, let’s explore the CBD usefullness they produce.

While CBD and other cannabinoids have been used by humans for thousands of years, intense research into the usefullness of CBD is still relatively new. Even after many years of study, still very little is known about how cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system and other systems within our bodies.

When combined with other ingredients, such as curcumin or melatonin, CBD and other cannabinoids can have even greater impact within the body. While CBD alone does not reduce inflammation, the curcumin in our CBD Softgels with Curcumin, for example, promotes healthy joint function. While CBD alone does not improve sleep, the melatonin in our CBD Softgels with Melatonin can help you get a better night's rest.
